Mattie Larson was born on May 20, 1992 to Gail and Eric Larson. Mattie got interested in gymnastics after she saw her older sister, Willie, taking gymnastics lessons. Since then Mattie has been hooked on gymnastics while her sister now takes dance lessons. Mattie trains at All Olympia Gymnastics Center where she is coached by Galina Marinova and Arthur Akopyan.

      Mattie’s talent was evident from the start of her career. Mattie swept the all around title at her first three preliminary competitions as well as Level 5 Sectional Championships and the California Level 5 Championships. She also became level 5 California State Champion on vault and beam. In spring of 2001 Mattie competed in several invitational competitions as a level 6 and went on to compete a full season of level 6 in the fall.

      In 2001 Mattie became the Level 6 California State Champion on vault, beam, floor, and the all-around. She also repeated this task at the Level 7 California State Championships in 2002. It was also during this time that Mattie scored the nations best score for TOPs testing and became a member of the 2002 USAG National TOPs Team. Mattie continued to rise as the talented California gymnast by placing 2nd all around at Level 8 California State Championships in 2003, and winning the all around, vault, beam, and floor gold medals at 2003 Level 8 Regiona One Championships.

      In 2004 Mattie competed and scored out of level 9 and became the 2004 Level 10 California State all-around champion eventually wining vault and beam at regionals. Mattie had also successfully placed herself on the 2004 Region 1 National Team. Mattie was on her way to Florida for the Junior Olympic National Championships. Mattie had a good outing for her first national championships, but nerves showed through leaving Mattie in 38th place all around.

      Mattie continued to dominate level 10 in 2005 taking the all around titles at state, regionals, and nationals. She earned the 2005 JO National Champion title and a spot at camp. Mattie went on to receive her international elite qualifying score in 2006. Mattie competed at the 2006 US Classic, her first and only chance to qualify to the USA National Championships. Mattie placed 5th in the all-around at the competition and secured her spot at the Championships competition in St. Paul, MN.

      Unfortunately Mattie was injured before the Championships competition began. Mattie started to return from her injury in 2007 and competed at the 2007 WOGA Classic where she placed 2nd in the all-around and 1st on vault. Mattie successfully petitioned to the 2007 US Classic to be held in Battle Creek, MI. Once there Mattie placed 3rd all-around and once again qualified to the USA National Championships. Mattie traveled to San Jose, CA to compete in her first ever USA National Championships competition. Mattie had a rough competition on day 1 but came back strong on day 2 to place 10th in the all-around and qualified to her first USA National Team!

      Mattie received her first international assignment when she was named to the USA squad traveling to Guatemala for the Junior Pan America Games. Once at the competition Mattie had a great helping win the gold medal in the team competition and winning the gold medal in the individual all around competition. She repeated her gold medal feat in event finals by taking first place on floor. She was later named the November USOC Female Athlete of the Month.

      In 2008 Mattie opened the year by placing 2nd on beam and 1st on floor at the 2008 WOGA Classic. In March Mattie was named to the Gymnix International team traveling to Montreal, CAN to compete as well as the Grand Prix Competition to be held in Jesolo, ITA. Mattie had a great showing in Montreal winning the silver in the all around competition and a bronze on bars. Unfortunately, Mattie was unable to travel to Italy due to a small injury to her foot. In May Mattie competed in the 2008 Friendship International Exchange at the Ranch in Texas where she placed 4th all around behind some seasoned seniors. She also won the silver medal on floor behind USA teammate Alicia Sacramone.

      Mattie competed in her first senior US National Championships in Boston, MA in June of 2008. Mattie had a great showing on the 2nd day, placing her 7th in the all around and qualifying to the 2008 US Olympic Trials. She traveled to Philadelphia, PA at the end of June to compete at Trials where she hit all eight of her routines and placed a solid seventh in the all around. Mattie was one of twelve athletes named to the 2008 Olympic Training Squad. These twelve athletes will travel to the National Team Training Center in July where the final Olympic Team will be named.

      Mattie spent most of 2009 rehabbing injuries. She came back strong in 2010 winning the 2010 US CoverGirl Classic in Chicago, IL. Mattie traveled to Hartford, CT for the 2010 Visa Championships where she started out strong by placing 2nd all around after day one of the competition. She continued with her strong showing and finished the competition with a silver medal in the all around. In addition to her al around medal Mattie earned a bronze medal on uneven bars and a gold medal on floor exercise. Mattie was also named to the 2010-2011 Senior National Team and invited to the 2010 World Championships Selection Camp!

      Mattie is now looking forward to receiving some more international assignments and hopes to one day make a World or Olympic team. In the mean time Mattie is home in Southern California training hard for National Team Training Camps and any other assignments that she may receive.
